Belle Baranceanu (1902-1988)

Painter, printmaker, muralist. Born in Chicago, Illinios on July 17, 1902. Baranceanu (originally Goldschlager but changed to mother’s maiden name in 1932) studied at the Minneapolis School of Art and Art Institute of Chicago under Anthony Angarola. She was engaged to be married to Angarola until his untimely death in 1929. Active in Chicago during the 1920’s as a teacher and exhibitor, she moved to Southern California in 1933. After settling in San Diego, she executed many murals for the Public Works of Art Project. She was active in the art world there through the early 1960’s. Locally, she taught at the La Jolla School of Art & Crafts as well as at the San Diego Fine Arts Gallery and the Frances W. Parker School. Baranceanu died in La Jolla on January 10, 1988.
